How to prevent skin allergies (Urticaria)1?
If the cause of hives can be identified, the first thing you should focus on is avoiding known triggers. Common causes of urticaria include: 1
- Blood transfusions
- Bacterial infections
- Latex
- Physical stimuli: such as hot or cold exercise, or sun exposure
- Certain food: such as nuts, eggs and shellfish
- Medicines: such as antibiotics, aspirin and ibuprofen
- Pollen
- Pet dander
Skin allergy treatments
Antihistamines are a frequently recommended treatment for hives (urticaria). 1
They work by blocking the effect of histamine, a chemical in the skin that can cause allergy symptoms.1
In addition to antihistamines, your allergist may recommend cold compresses or anti-itch salves to ease the symptoms.1
Severe episodes of urticaria may require temporary treatment with a corticosteroid medication or an immune modulator. If your reaction involves swelling of your tongue or lips, or you have trouble breathing, your allergist may prescribe an epinephrine (adrenaline).1
